Today was a pretty hard day....the wind had changed direction and came more from the south, which is straight off shore from Portland, a big headland/mountain/island. Thus, the wind had to maneuver it's way around it, making it very inconsistent - both shifty and gusty ranging from 8-13knots.
In both of the races today, I had great starts. In the first race I was able to play the wind well and turn that start into a 3rd place finish. In the second race, I also had a great first upwind leg, rounding with the top bunch of girls, probably in 7th. On the downwind I fell - and I'm still puzzled as to how exactly but I think I just lost wind in my sail and my legs buckled underneath me. That lost me some distance I had on the girls behind me. Then up the next leg I lost a few more boards as I didn't get in a gust...and the same in the downwind. Part strategical mistake, part unlucky (that I just didn't get the same wind that the others around me did)....but that's the way it went. I finished 14th in that race.
The qualifying series is now over. We've also had 6 races, and after 5 races you get to discard your worst score. I dropped my 14th place. This has put me into 10th place overall going into the final series. Tomorrow is our rest day and racing will resume on Tuesday.
Till soon!!!
Nikola
